Tractor Corner #31: Goldie – Timeless (1995)

Tractor Corners decide to go one step behind and decide to take back old things from the “memory attic”. Four appointments, dedicated to some of the most important drum’n’bass masterpieces: albums that invaded the eardrums of those who put them through their earphones, suggesting a new turning point and a further development for the genre.

It was 1995 when “golden boy” Goldie produced for FRRR Records  – a “sister label” of London Records – his own long – playing debut Timeless, which is still considered not only a masterpiece but a real turning point in electronic music’s history.
The deal between Goldie and London Records came before the wave of record deals that, for a short but intense period, brought the drum’n’bass sound in the mainstream world, making it available to everybody. In 1994 the producer, who was backed by Kemistry and Storm, had finally given birth to his own record label: Metalheadz Records, which, under its symbol depicting a skull with headphones, represented and still represents a freedom oasis for drum’n’bass cultural independence, without any kind of compromise between the artist and the label itself. Anyway, what really convinced the London Records headquarters to release a record such as Timeless was the ability to keep them interested for exactly 22 minutes, which is the duration of the beautiful and delicious title-track, a real three-movements suite: Inner City Life, Pressure, Jah. A true kaleidoscope of sounds and  crazy rhythms, suspended between the unimaginable and the visionary: a track that would become the genre’s unattainable peak and ecstatic moment.
Saint Angel, instead, is sonically aggressive and dark and hides the following State Of Mind and Sea Of Tears, that close the first side of  Timeless in a calm, reflective and ancestral manner. 

On the other side, Angel (with its quiet and relaxing tone) anticipates the hypnotic atmosphere of Sensual, Kemistry and the album – closing track: You And Me, a song that will leave you with the sensation of looping the track back to the starting point, with his 1990s pianos, that actually hide something way deeper and more diverse thanks to Lorna Harris’ vocals and the instrumental track’s sharpness.

In 1995, with Timeless, Goldie had certainly made a deal with the Devil. Despite his long and variegated career (that will find him involved in the activities of DJ, producer and promoter of his own Metalheadz label) he will never reach similar standards. However, what really matters to us is the fact that Timeless is considered, by any standards, a really “timeless” classic, enhanced by an incredible intensity and by a qualitative level that remains intact throughout it whole 70 minutes length.

Quattro appuntamenti dedicati ad alcuni dei lavori più importanti per il mondo della d’n'b; album che hanno invaso i timpani di chi li ha calati nelle cuffie, portando in maniera indelebile un contributo di fondamentale importanza per far crescere e segnare un punto di svolto al genere.

Era il 1995 quando il dorato Goldie, produsse per la FRRR Records (sorella della London Records) il suo debutto sulla lunga distanza, Timeless, considerato ancora oggi non solo come un capolavoro ma, come un vero e proprio spartiacque nella storia della musica elettronica.

L’affare fra Goldie e la London Records, arrivò prima dell’ondata delle grandi scritturazioni che per un breve ma intenso periodo, portarono il suono drum’n'bass nel mondo mainstream e alla portata di tutti. Nel 1994, il producer sostenuto da Kemistry and Storm, aveva finalmente dato alla luce la sua etichetta, la Metalheadz Records che, sotto quel simbolo raffigurante un teschio con le cuffie, rappresentò e rappresenta ancora oggi un’oasi di libertà indipendente e cultura verso la drum’n'bass, senza nessun tipo di compromesso fra l’artista e l’etichetta stessa.

Quello che però convinse i piani alti della London Records a licenziare un disco come Timeless, fu la capacità di tenerli incollati per ventidue minuti esatti, ovvero il tempo della splendida e deliziosa title-track, una vera e propria suite in tre movimenti: Inner City Life, Pressure, Jah. Un vero e proprio caleidoscopio di suoni e ritmiche impazzite fra l’inimmaginabile e il visionario che diventerà, vetta irraggiungibile e momento estatico per il genere.
Saint Angel invece, aggressiva ed ombrosa dal punto di vista sonoro, nasconde le successive State of mind e Sea of Tears, che chiudono in maniera pacata, riflessiva ed ancestrale la prima parte di Timeless.

Angel invece, con i suoi toni pacati e distensivi, anticipa le atmosfere ipnotiche di Sensual, Kemistry e del capolinea del disco: You and me. Un brano che ti lascia con la sensazione di riavvolgere il nastro dal punto di partenza, con i suoi piani ’90 che in realtà riservano qualcosa di diverso e molto più intenso fra i vocalizzi di Lorna Harris e l’incisività crescente della strumentale.

Goldie nel 1995 con Timeless, strinse sicuramente un patto col Diavolo. Nonostante la sua lunga e trasversale carriera (che lo vede impegnato nelle attività di dj, produttore e promotore della sua Metalheadz), non raggiungerà mai più simili standard. A noi però, importa il fatto che Timeless è considerato a tutti gli effetti un classico senza limiti di tempo, arricchito da un’incredibile intensità e da un livello qualitativo che si snoda in circa 70 minuti senza nessun calo.

Quando il corpo e la mente si nutrono dello stesso cibo.
